Motorola debuts 64GB Moto X with a 'Try then buy' promo

We're still waiting on Motorola to officially out the Moto X+1, which is expected to launch in late summer or early fall. In the meantime, however, the company has quietly introduced a 64GB version of the company's current flagship device, the Moto X, for $450 without a contract.

Hoping to get more people to give the Moto X a whirl, Motorola also introduced a limited "try then buy" promotion. The deal lets you put one penny down on any Moto X—complete with Moto Maker customizations—and take it for a two week test drive. If you don't like it after that, you just return it.

Don't get too excited, though: Motorola has already sold its allotment of "try then buy" Moto X handsets. Nevertheless, as Motorola looks to prop-up sales and clear its inventory before it changes hands from Google to Lenovo, we may see more of these deals in the future.

The advantage of "try then buy" is that you can find out what it's like to use the Moto X, complete with the colors and other customizations you'd like. Previously, the best you could do was wander into a carrier store and play with the stock version of the device.

Before the 64GB release, the Moto X was available in 16GB and 32GB flavors, with the 32GB version selling for just $50 less than the new 64GB unit at $400 contract-free.

Along with the storage bump for the Moto X, Motorola also recently opened up its Motorola Alert app to more of its phones. Motorola Alert automatically sends periodic location updates to specific people. The app can be used in times of emergency or just to let your loved ones know when you get home or arrive at work.

Motorola Alert first appeared for the Moto E, but now the Moto X and Moto G are officially supported, as first reported by Android Central.
